TIMTOS 2017 incorporates software and hardware innovations in machine tools development

According to the reported statistics from The Economist, the industrial production index from Taiwan in August 2016 has grown 7.7% in comparison to the number of August, in the year of 2015. The recovery appeared to be quite impressive among other regions in the Asia Pacific. The export statistics from Taiwan to destinations such as the U.S., Japan and Korea from January to July, 2016 have found solid increase in the percentages, which is 4.5%, 14.6%, 56.3% respectively. Although the amount of machineries being shipped to China plunged in the past months, this pressure is shared by every global market given the common factor of China adjusting its pace in economic development. Close observers expect that China still remain a secure market for machinery exports given the stable development in infrastructure as well as the potential empowering domestic demands.

A clear pathway for the future progression regarding Taiwan’s machinery sector has been well established after several major trade shows this year (MTduo, Taipei PLAS, and Taichung automation industry exhibition). The strategies for Taiwan machinery builders are to focus in smart manufacturing, automation, and eco-friendly technologies, whilst strengthening special-purpose machine tools. These industrial highlights are increasingly valued among users.

Moreover, Taiwan’s machine tool builders are taping into broader industrial manufacturing sectors with their machine tools. Apart from the astonishing achievements that they have shown in the global automobile manufacturing industry in the last decades, most machine tool builders in Taiwan are keen to be engaged in the fast evolving emerging sectors such as aerospace, medical, (clean) energy industries and a lightweight future for cars. These critical trends are the main goals global manufacturers industry is after as a whole. At IMTS 2016 held in Chicago earlier in September, the exhibition once again reassured visitors the importance of these techniques. “Advanced manufacturing” is no longer a distant dream of the human beings as it seemed several years ago, it has become an ongoing reality in the sector. Today, the machine tool sector is spreading out extensively to represent the customer’s demand, replacing an orthodox order of the manufacturing industry where the customers were passive recipients from mass factory production. Thanks to present technology such as IoT and all sorts of smart software that gave machine tools more characteristics to be involved in the customers’ desire, the manufacturing sector is capable to take a huge stride forward to create stronger, more identical solutions closer to customers’ imagination.

As for the market strategic planning, the efforts from every private machine tool builders made true capacity widely seen globally. On top of that, governmental advocates and resources invested (‘Taiwan machine tools shaping the world’ project carried out by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and TAITRA) in the sector are expected to bring valuable effects. The aim is to stabilize the machine tool shares in industrial countries while working to enter emerging economies such as the ASEAN region, India, Turkey and Eastern European economies with Taiwan’s high-performing economical machine tools.

Regardless to all the goals and market strategies discussed, the general public cannot ignore that the priority of positive industrial advancement always derives from sophisticated and skilled brains, highlighting the importance of education and long term plans in the technical and vocational trainings. Presently, lots of the machine tool companies have been in partnership with young skilled technicians. The ability to attract the next generation to be participated in the 21st century smart manufacturing industry would also be the major focus for TIMTOS 2017. Nurturing able and innovative young people to the sector will enormously contribute to the welfare of all human beings when the manufacturing is truly efficient, clean and accurate.
